TUSKEGEE, AL – April 11, 2025 – The Utilities Board of Tuskegee proudly announces the
receipt of a $500,000 grant awarded by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). This
significant funding, announced by Governor Kay Ivey on Friday, will be directed towards
essential upgrades at the North Wastewater Treatment Plant.
This crucial project will allow for the construction of an advanced disinfection system,
enhancing the plant’s capacity to treat and release water that meets the rigorous standards set by
the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). The upgrade addresses the
urgent need for a permanent solution and replaces the current temporary system.
Gerald Long, UBT General Manager, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We are immensely
pleased to receive this half-million-dollar grant from the ARC to assist us in our disinfection
process at the wastewater treatment plant. This project is not just an upgrade; it is a vital step
toward ensuring the health and safety of our community. We are committed to providing
Tuskegee and the surrounding areas with reliable and safe water services.”
Governor Ivey highlighted the importance of the grant: “Access to clean water is absolutely
essential to a healthy community. This project will improve the quality of life for Macon County
residents and make the area more attractive to new industry. I’m pleased to support this grant and
am excited to see the positive impact it will have on this area.”
Kenneth Boswell, Director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs,
which administers the ARC program in Alabama, also commended the initiative: “This upgrade
is great news for this community and will provide a more practical and cost-effective system for
wastewater treatment. I join Gov. Ivey in commending all the community leaders who worked to
move this project forward.”
