The Utilities Board of Tuskegee (UBT) consists of a municipally owned electrical department as well as water and waste water departments. The Electrical Department installs, operates and maintains a 46kV transmission system and a 12kV distribution system in its service area. The electrical service area of the Utilities Board of Tuskegee (UBT) is 103 square miles and lies, generally, along Interstate 85 from approximately Exit 22 to Exit 38. This service area extends both North and South of I-85 and includes the towns of Tuskegee, Franklin, and Shorter.
The 46kV transmission system consists of ten (10) miles of line with 149 structures and 355 miles of distribution lines with 11,500 poles. UBT has five (5) distribution substations. Two of these are115kV to12kV and the other three (3) are 46kV to12kV substations. There is sufficient capacity in these substation to serve additional industrial, commercial, and residential developments well into the future. Primarily due to routine right of way maintenance, the system reliability is in the 99.9+ percent.
UBT is a member of the Alabama Municipal Electric Authority (AMEA) which consists of eleven (11) members. AMEA provides several different types of service to UBT. One of these services is a good, reliable source of purchased power since UBT does not own any generating facilities. The majority of power that UBT purchases through AMEA for resale is provided by Alabama Power Company. The remainder is provided by other generating companies.
